Final thoughts on Play to Learn

I must say this was a very challenging but interesting experience and I applaud everyone who made this happen for us.

A few thoughts on my personal challenges with Play to Learn...
I think without a doubt, creating a blog of my own was very exciting. I had no idea that it was that easy to do. I think the technology can be intimidating, but with the step-by-step procedure, it was empowering. I will try to keep myself in tune with the technology as it changes, which we all know it will.

I would love to see LCLS do more in the future with this type of learning to keep everyone on top of the innovations. I suggest that if we take it a little more slowly for the next phase, it might not be so overwhelming for staff. At this time of the year and with staffing shortages, it became almost too stressful. Maybe if the lessons were in groups of 5 rather than 10 it would be easier to absorb. A little more specific instruction might be helpful, i.e., 'click here', 'cut and paste there,' etc. I also think that you may need to make this mandatory to get everyone on board. I told LK staff that while it was not mandatory this time, the Library Administration thought this was important enoughto give us time to work on it, so they must feel strongly and want us to do it. I think I had about 50-75% completion by LK staff. I see this as a possible teambuilding experience if it is continued in a positive and enriching way.

THANKS!!!

Video, RSS Feed and LCLS Download Library

I added the Cookie Monster video, but somehow I added it twice and I cannot seem to delete the second one, still working on that.

I added the RSS feed for Walt Disney World (WDW) to my blogline and I have downloaded Short Circuit from our catalog.

This was a challenging experience, but well worth the effort. I just hope that I can use the technology I have learned from this to keep up with it from now on.

Thanks for the opportunity,

Joanne

Web 2.0

I wanted to find out more about a minor health issue that I am interested in communicating with others about. I used the "Health" Award winner from the Web 2.0 choices and was pleasantly surprised at how many other people had information and resources to help guide me. I went to Medstory and PEERtrainer, both of which had posts that were extremely current (within the last hour!). Very interesting and encouraging to see that there is not only medical advice out there but people who have their own stories to share and advice from experience.

Many times patrons want to know that they are not alone in dealing with health issues. With Web 2.0 there is privacy yet there is also a network to discuss and get information easily.

Library 2.0/Web 2.0

First off, after reading all of these technology transitions in very recent years and realizing that I have personally lived through all of it, I feel OLD. :>) But I must admit it is gratifying to be able to say that I have witnessed and taken part as a professional librarian in this exciting process. I remember well when SEFLIN (Southeast Florida Library Information Network) told us in the early 1990's that computers were here to stay and how we were all scared but excited all at the same time.

All of the new technology has "everything to gain and nothing to lose" written all over it. Personally I think the key is getting library staff on board with it. Everyone must be of the same mind and focused on the goal of learning it and developing the comfort with it to provide the best possible service possible. Patrons will be of all levels as we move forward. There will still be those patrons (for a few more years at least) that are intimidated by the basic technology, but slowly, patrons will be of a mind that they are not only on board, but they are begging for more and more.

Tom@MySpace

Well, I found him easily and his zodiac sign is Libra. The site is:

He is quite accomplished at such a young age.

I played the game of billiards and found it frustrating! I used to be pretty good at PacMan and similar computer games years ago, but this was tough. I never did get the hang of it so the computer had an easy time with me for a score of 9 to ZERO!
